Collection consists of 35mm slides taken by photographers James Taulman ( images), Jan Faul (29 images), and Robert Burgess (19 images) of buildings throughout the city.

Tauman's images were taken as part of a project funded by Trammell Crow Company in Dalas Texas in to document recent commercial architecture across the country. Only the images documenting the District are included in this collection. The collection was assembled by the Library following its acquisition.

Provenance

The Taulman portion of the collection was purchased by the DC Public Library in At the time of the acquisition, the Faul and Burgess images were added to the collection and processed under the assumption they were donated by Taulman.

A conversation with Mr. Taulman in determined that they were not donated by him and no documentation indicating how the Library acquired this images or why they were combined with the Taulman images was discovered.

James F. Taulman

James “Jim” F. Taulman, a lifetime photography enthusiast, was employed by the Trammell Crow Real Estate Company in Dallas to undertake an assignment in which he traveled throughout the United States and Canada during through photographing recent commercial architecture.

Professionally, Taulman was a wildlife biologist researching ecology and behavior, and worked for the US Forest Service Southern Experiment Station and in several academic institutions. In retirement, he spends most of his time exploring the wildlands of New Mexico observing and photographing wildlife.


Jan W. Faul

Jan W. Faul () was born in Port Chester, New York and is best known for his panoramic photographs of landscapes and historic sites. His mother was an artist and his father was a geophysicist. His family moved often, and Faul had lived in nine homes, both in the United States and abroad, by the time he went to college.

Faul attended The George Washington University, where he studied art history and graphics. Upon graduation in , Faul worked in several Smithsonian museums.

A self-taught photographer, Faul went on to curate photography exhibits for Senator Howard Baker. This job was a gateway to many opportunities in the photography field. Faul eventually served as Chief Photographer at the Office of Economic Opportunity, and later shot photographs for the Appalachian Regional Commission, the Smithsonian Institution, and Time Magazine.

In , Faul moved to Denmark, where he spent the next 10 years taking on a number of commercial assignments. Faul is the recipient of several grants and awards, including grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies.

Robert Burgess

In , his photographs were featured among Time Magazine’s “Pictures of the Year.” In , Burgess published Finding Paris: Photographs by Robert work has been featured in several art shows and exhibitions.

Processing Procedure

The collection was processed at the item level. The images were arranged by photographer name, and each slide was examined, labeled and described separately.

  • Following a conversation with Taulman it was determined that he was not the source of the Faul and Burgess images. Library staff decided not to separate them from the collection.
