What was the inspiration behind stitching your love story on the lehenga?
For my wedding clothes, I decided to design all my outfits under my brand Koecsh, which I was very excited and comfortable doing as I wear super edgy stuff that isn't usually what I am able to find. For the pheras, I felt a bit challenged because I don’t like not being able to use the same garment multiple times in multiple ways for multiple occasions.
One evening, while watching an episode of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, I saw one of the cast member’s Adrienne Maloof's framed wedding dress. As I knew my wedding lehenga would be something I would only wear once, I decided to make it a piece of artwork that I would later frame.
In order to make it into a special piece of art, I decided to embroider my entire lehenga with Vanraj and my story - our milestones, the proposal, and all our important moments up until the wedding.
2. What was your husband Vanraj's reaction when your shared the idea with him?
He had no idea.
Vanraj knew I was going to be wearing white and gold, as those were the colours he had picked for us. He also had some idea about the kind of fabric and materials I was using since he was designing all my jewellery. When he saw me on our wedding day, he loved the look of the outfit, but it was only later that he realised that there was more to it.
While we were in the middle of our pheras (the marriage ceremony) he noticed a wine glass, and then a dolphin stitched on the lehenga and there was this priceless expression of surprise on his face. It was only post the ceremony, when we returned to our room that he actually sat down and looked at everything.
3. Tell us something about the fabric, embroidery and silhouettes of the lehenga.
While deciding on a fabric for Vanraj, we came across this beautiful novelty silk which is primarily used for men’s kurtas and sherwanis.
It appealed to me because of its matte finish. Like most silk blends, it had richness and had a lovely fall but unlike the regular blends it didn't have that prominent shine or two-tone effect. Mine is a classic 14 kali lehenga because I wanted it to be timeless. It’s a beautiful mix of traditional materials like saadi, nakshi, kardana, salli, tikki, zari and pearls and I’ve used zardozi and aari embroidery techniques.

Your husband is a jewellery designer, did he also contribute to your trousseau in some way?
He did in fact design all my jewellery for all our functions. It was a bit nerve-racking because he hadn't seen any of my completed outfits while designing the sets. I’ve also never been too much of a fan of jewellery, but when I saw how unique my sets were I fell instantly in love with them.
He had captured my aesthetics in those pieces perfectly.
